His pioneering 'passive resistance' methods for civil disobedience inspired leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Steve Biko and Dr. Martin Luther King in the fight for civil rights worldwide. In India he is honored as the 'father of the Nation' with his birthday celebrated as a national holiday.
